Community Members Spread Mental Illness Awareness
The National Alliance on mental Illness in Michigan (NAMI Michigan) will hold the 11th annual NAMIWalk on Saturday, September 27, 2014. The 5K Walk will take place at Heritage Park, 46202 Heritage Park Rd., Canton, MI. Registration begins at 10 a.m. and the official start time is 12 Noon, rain or shine. The NAMIWalk is a nationwide fundraising and mental health awareness program that is being held in nearly 100 communities around the country in 2014, including here in Michigan.
"NAMI members are volunteers whose mission is to provide help and support to people with mental and emotional illnesses and their families," Kevin Fischer, Executive Director of NAMI Michigan said. "The goals of the Walk are to raise money to promote the mission and to increase public awareness of these conditions by providing free NAMI signature programs."
Historically, the Walk has raised over $100,000 annually for NAMI Michigan and its affiliates for the free mental health support programs and groups to families and individuals across the state. All the funds collected by walkers will be used to fund NAMI programs in Michigan. These programs include support, education, research and advocacy for brain disorders, including depression, PTSD, anxiety, bipolar, schizophrenia and other disorders. Registration for the NAMIWalk is free to all, but fundraising for donations is strongly encouraged. Companies and organizations and families are encouraged to organize teams to take part in this 11th anniversary Walk at www.namiwalks.org/michigan.
