The coaching competition in the NFC North just got a stronger with the hire of a Super Bowl-experienced coach.

The Detroit Lions have hired a former Indianapolis Colts head coach, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter.

Caldwell directed the Colts to Super Bowl XLIV, where they lost to the New Orleans Saints.

He takes over for Jim Schwartz, who was fired after the Lions collapsed in December and lost a 1.5 game lead in the NFC North.

The Packers overtook Detroit and won the division on the final day of the season.
