Homeless No More to Raise Funds for Homeless Families

Homeless No More to Raise Funds for Homeless Families

Volunteers of America Michigan’s major fundraiser, Homeless No More, this year highlights an alarming reality: That the majority of homeless people served by Lansing-area agencies are women and children.

“Unfortunately you can see this every day here at our homeless service center,” said Patrick Patterson, Executive Vice President. “In our Community Kitchen, you’ll often see a mom pushing a stroller with one hand, balancing lunch trays with her other hand, with a toddler at her side.”

More than 60 percent of the homeless clients served by Greater Lansing Homeless Resolution Network providers in 2011 were women or children, according to the report by the city of Lansing.

Numbers like these are why Lansing-area community leaders are coming together to support the fundraising event called Homeless No More. This year’s event will be 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on February 13th at Eagle Eye Golf Club, 15500 Chandler Road, East Lansing.

The first Homeless No More event, in 2012, raised $187,600.

“That funding was absolutely essential to keep our programs operating,” said Kevin McGraw, Chairman of the Lansing Committee for Volunteers of America. “We set our goal higher this year because the need is so great.”

For the fiscal year ending June 30, 2012, Volunteers of America provided a safe place to stay for 513 children, allowing them to stay with their parents during brief periods of homelessness. That number has nearly been reached during just the first five months of this fiscal year: From July 1 to Nov. 30, 2012, the VOA provided safe lodging for 498 children with their families through our Hotel Emergency Lodging Program.

With a continuous presence in Lansing since 1896, Volunteers of America Michigan is the region’s largest homeless service provider. Our 10 programs range from life-saving crisis assistance to stabilization to helping people return to independent living.
