Rare twin tornadoes result in death, destruction in Nebraska

The residents of Pilger, a small town in Nebraska, are cleaning up today after a pair of deadly twin tornadoes tore through their town on Monday.

Twin tornadoes are a rare sight. The term is used to describe a tornado with two visible suction vortices or two separate tornadoes on the ground at the same time in the same general area. They are known for their destructive power.

The rare tornadoes on Monday night totally wiped out the town's business district, obliterated its fire station and approximately 40 to 50 homes. Pilger Middle School was also damaged. According to Stanton County Sheriff Mike Unger, 50 to 75 percent of the town is destroyed.

Storm chasers were able to capture dramatic video and photos of the twin tornadoes as they tore through the area around Pilger.

Two people died because of the wicked storm, including a 5-year-old child. Sixteen people were critically injured, according to CNN. Emergency personnel are still searching the town's rubble Tuesday morning for anyone who was possibly trapped or killed. They are being helped by the National Guard, according to NBC.

Greg Posel with The Weather Channel described the storm as "significant" and "one that I have never seen the likes of, ever. Really."

Local Pilger teacher Gregg Moeller told Norfolk Daily News: "It was like God dragged two fingernails across the land."

Pilger, which is home to 378 residents, wasn't the only town hit though. The severe weather also caused damage in the Nebraska towns of Wisner, Stanton and Pender. All four towns are about an hour and a half northwest of Omaha. No deaths or injuries were reported in the other towns.

The governor of Nebraska has declared a state of emergency. More severe weather is in the forecast today from the northern Plains to the Great Lakes. However, there are no tornadoes expected at this time.

There were also unconfirmed reports of tornadoes Monday in North Dakota and Wisconsin.
